The Organist

The minister is upset because he has to tell his congregation they'll have to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the roof of the church. Besides that, the regular organist is sick and a substitute has been called at the last minute and arrives just before the service is to start. She asks the minister what she should play.

"Here's a copy of the service," he says impatiently. "But you'll have to come up with something on your own after I make the announcement about the finances."

At the end of the service, the minister pauses and says, "There's one thing more. I have a special announcement to make. The repairs we are making to the roof of the church are costing twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."

At that moment, the substitute organist breaks into "The Star-Spangled Banner."

And that is how the substitute became the regular organist.
